Gotta Be Somebody

Ok, so I was listening to music, and a popular Nickelback song came on. I’ve heard this song prolly 50 times but I’ve never really thought about it before. In this song the entire western philosophy of love is present. Don’t believe me? Let me show you. Here’s the song in it’s entirety and then I’ll break it down line by line and give my commentary.

Gotta Be Somebody/ Nickelback

This time, I wonder what it feels like
To find the one in this life, the one we all dream of
But dreams just aren't enough
So I'll be waiting for the real thing, I'll know it by the feeling

The moment when we're meeting, will play out like a scene
Straight off the silver screen
So I'll be holding my breath, right up 'til the end
Until that moment when, I find the one that I'll spend forever with

Cause nobody wants to be the last one there
Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares
Someone to love with my life in their hands
There's gotta be somebody for me like that
Cause nobody wants to do it on their own
And everyone wants to know they're not alone
There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere
There's gotta be somebody for me out there

Tonight, out on the street, out in the moonlight
And dammit this feels too right, it's just like déja vu
Me standing here with you
So I'll be holding my breath, could this be the end?
Is it that moment when, I find the one that I'll spend forever with

Cause nobody wants to be the last one there
Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares
Someone to love with my life in their hands
There's gotta be somebody for me like that
Cause nobody wants to do it on their own
And everyone wants to know they're not alone
There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere
There's gotta be somebody for me out there

You can't give up, (when you're looking for) a diamond in the rough (cause you never know)
When it shows up, (make sure you're holding on)
Cause it could be the one, the one you're waiting on
Cause nobody wants to be the last one there
And everyone wants to feel like someone cares
Someone to love with my life in their hands
There's gotta be somebody for me, oh

Nobody wants to go it on their own
And everyone wants to know they're not alone
There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere
There's gotta be somebody for me out there
Nobody wants to be the last one there
Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares
There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere
There's gotta be somebody for me out there

And here’s my rather sarcastic commentary. i don't feel that i need to point out what is wrong with this picture, if you read the words and know even a little about real love, being unselfish, and caring about others you'll see what is wrong.

This time, I wonder what it feels like
To find the one in this life ,the one we all dream of
But dreams just aren't enough
So I'll be waiting for the real thing, I'll know it by the feeling

Dreams, imagining, fantasy, but the “real” thing is so much better! And you’ll know it by the feeling, cause everyone knows love is just a feeling.

The moment when we're meeting, will play out like a scene
Straight off the silver screen
So I'll be holding my breath, right up 'til the end
Until that moment when, I find the one that I'll spend forever with

It’ll happen just like in the movies. All those romantic movies you watch? Yea it’s a good thing! Now you’ll know exactly what to look for, and you’ll recognize it when it happens. How can you not? You’ve watched it happen at least 462,000 times.

Cause nobody wants to be the last one there
Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares
Someone to love with my life in their hands
There's gotta be somebody for me like that

You want to feel like someone cares, not know for certain they care by their actions. My life in their hands, cause it’s not really 50/50, the other person is expected to carry the load.

Cause nobody wants to do it on their own
And everyone wants to know they're not alone
There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere

Of course no one wants to be alone! And you shouldn't! There is definitely someone somewhere that also wants to not feel alone. And they're expecting you to make that happen. Just so you know.

There's gotta be somebody for me out there
Tonight, out on the street, out in the moonlight
And dammit this feels too right, it's just like déja vu
Me standing here with you
So I'll be holding my breath, could this be the end?
Is it that moment when, I find the one that I'll spend forever with

It happens in a moment, you will realize in a single moment if this is the “one” (it usually involves a kiss!) And, dammit, it will feel just right, not too right, not wrong, not ok, just right!

It will come to you, you don’t have to go out to find it, or work hard at keeping it. It’ll just happen. There is one person, out of 100,000 billion people on the planet for you. Only one that will make you happy for the rest of your life. But it’s ok, cause you’ll find each other. You're meant to be, destined for each other. There is no one that could make you as happy as this one person.

Just keep believing, it’ll happen without any work from you!
But what really sums up the philosophy of love, is this phrase right here: There's gotta be somebody for me. There is someone for me. It’s about me, and how someone else will make me happy.
And that, ladies and gentlemen is what is wrong with this culture’s view of love.

Red Riding Hood

i just finished watching Red Riding Hood. It was pretty much what i expected, which is what you say? Well.... Ok i didn't know much about this movie, which is weird for me. Usually i don't watch a movie unless i know the general story line. Anyway, i had only seen one preview for this movie, but i decided to watch it anyways. From that one preview i guessed that the story would be very much a fairy tale, a romanticised version of the little red riding hood story. Lots of fantasy, lots of dramatic camera shots. Very cool costumes. And that was pretty much what this movie was like. i enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, it's a very interesting twist on a rather boring tale. i just wasn't in the mood for a romantic, dramatic movie. Plus it was too romantic. People don't actually go after love like that. People settle for far less than true love, they don't endure as much as Valerie and Peter do. In real life Valerie would have married Henry and Peter wouldn't have tried as hard to stop it. Sorry, this is a person pet peeve of mine. i really hate movies that display love in this way, because it's so inaccurate. Sorry, back to the review. It's a well-made movie, and a pretty captivating story. i especially liked how they showed that the desire for money is what caused so many deaths. i thought that was an appropriate touch. i recommend it. (Unless you're like me and really hate movies that show love this way)

Darkness

"So, what are you afraid of?" He said, his eyes teasing me. This was all a game to him.
"You'll laugh," i said, "It's so dumb."
"No i won't, i'd never laugh at something you're really afraid of."
i glanced up at him, he looked sincere, with just a tough of concern. i took a deep breath, "Ok, i'm, um, i'mafraidofthedark." i said quickly, trying to get it over with. His face relaxed, and he smiled. "Why are you afraid of the dark?"
i sighed. i hated to explain it. "Because i can't see, and i don't feel safe in the dark. Anyways, it's creepy."
He stared at me for a moment without saying anything, then smiled, almost mischievously. His eyes began to twinkle. It was that look, he had an idea.
"Come with me." He said as he grabbed my hand and started towards the door.
We ran to the door, outside and up the concrete steps till we were on the lawn outside the church. It was a warm summer night, late enough to be pretty dark. He turned me to face him, and took my hands in his.
"Please don't be afraid of the dark, if you are you'll miss the most amazing thing about it." i cocked my head to the side, and looked at him questioningly. "What do you mean?"
"Look up. The dark is the only place for stars to shine."
i looked up, and saw thousands of stars. More than i'd ever noticed before. It was magical.
"See Sunshine, it's not all bad. Stars are so beautiful, if you avoid the dark you miss out on the magic of starlight." He looked straight into my eyes and smiled so warmly, i couldn't help but smile back.
"Ok," i laughed, "i'll remember that. Thank you Andy!" He reached out to me and i leaned into his arms. It felt safe. We stood there, looking at the stars, just holding each other.
It was the most precious summer night i can remember.

Confidence

The bell above the door chimes as she walks into the store. She is only 5'5 but she appears taller, her shoulders are back, her head held high. Her strides are even and smooth. She walks straight to the aisle she needs. She knows what she needs and how to get it. She finds the correct shelf and spends no more than 30 seconds choosing the item she wants. She makes a decision and sticks to it. As she walks to the register she makes eye contact with the people she passes. While standing in line she keeps her eyes ahead, focused. She doesn't need to read the gossip magazines or play with her phone. When her turn comes she meets the cashier's eyes and says hello. The cashier asks if that purchase is all she needs, and she replies "Yes Ma'am." Her voice is even, her accent slight. The cashier states the total, and our girl pulls a bill out of her back pocket and hands it across the counter. She takes the change the cashier offers her, and picks up her purchase. She meets the cashier's eye and says "Thank you." She walks to the door, pushes it open. You can hear the bell chime, and she is gone.

Andy

Hi Andy,
i was thinking about you today. I'm packing, getting ready for this next year. i wonder what you would say about CDO and this internship. i know you'd be happy, this is exactly what you wanted for me. i wish you were here. i want to show you around camp. i want you to meet the people I'll be living with. i want to sit in the hammocks and talk with you. i want, and need your advice. i want to feel your arms around me. i want one more day with you. i need you right now.
This is the most amazing and most terrifying thing I've ever done, and i need my big brother with me. But you're not here. So what do i do, Andy? I'm so scared, and I'm not ready for this. This next year will be amazing, but i don't want to to go through it without you. You're my star and i need you to shine. How does sunshine survive with out starlight? i don't know, i just survive. i remember the things you said, i remember your smile. i remember you wanted amazing things for and from me. You wanted me to shine, and you believed i could. Andy, for you I'll do my best, I'll work hard, I'll live every moment of this year, and I'll try to shine for you. i wish that was enough to bring you back, but since it isn't, just know that i miss you, and love you. You are the most fantastic big brother a girl could have.
i love you Andy,
Your Sunshine

Farris Wheel

i have a fascination with Farris Wheels. i don't know why since i'm a little afraid of heights, but i love riding them. i love the feel of the wind as it spins upward; i like to feel the bucket swing as it rises higher. i love the view from the top, i like being able to see for what seems like miles. i love the descent, watching the ground rise up to meet me. Mostly tho i think i would love to ride a Farris Wheel with someone i care about. i'm a little scared of heights so i think i'd like the excuse to cuddle up with someone, especially if we ride at night ;) Just something i'd like to do someday...

Shane

Dear Shane,

I'm getting ready to move away and start this internship at CDO. It's an amazing opportunity, a chance to experience something i never thought i'd be part of. i blame you.

God used you to start this whole thing. Do you remember the night we met? It was at church and you were talking about all that God has doing in your life, and especially about the prison ministry you are involved in. You talked about the boys center in Mt. Vernon, and i remembered working at the Boys Ranch. i remembered that i had wanted to work with teens that everyone else forgot, that didn't have a chance at a better life. You and i talked about Mt. Vernon, and i decided to start getting involved in that ministry. I'm so glad i did! It made me remember that passion i used to have for kids like that. I'd gotten distracted after high school, I'd forgotten how incredible it is to be involved in a ministry like that one.

Then when Kayla asked me to think about working at CDO this summer, it seemed like the natural thing to do. It was the next step. But i wouldn't have gone if i hadn't already been involved at Mt. Vernon. i've had the opportunity to work at CDO before but i haven't had the desire before. And while i was at CDO this summer, you supported me. i knew i could call you anytime, and when we did talk you laughed at my stories, just listened to me talk about everything, gave me advice, and generally kept me sane.

This internship is something God has been preparing me for and i didn't even know. God worked through you to help bring me to a place where i was ready and willing for something like this. You didn't just let God use you, you took the time to care about me, when i really needed someone.

So me being ready for this next year? Yea i blame you.

A New Concept

i was faced with an entirely foreign idea today:
i will be missed.
i wasn't planning on being missed, honestly it never even crossed my mind. i was at my church and i was telling people about the internship. i expected them to act happy for me, but most of them also said they would miss me. i wasn't prepared for that. i thought since i had already been gone most of the summer i would just kinda fade out, and they'd go on like I'd never been there. But they said they'd miss me... And i think most of them meant it.
I'm not sure what to do with this, i've missed a lot of other people but i've never been missed before.
i miss my older brother every day. i've had countless friends, teachers, youth groups, and pastors, come and go through my life. i've missed them all for a time, but i've never been missed.
i thought, at most, a handful of people would still be thinking about me in two months. Instead it's a lot of people! So many asked when I'll be back, and a few asked if they could come visit me.
i will be missed.
It's an entirely new concept, and I'm not really sure what to do with it.

180

My life took a 180 last week. i had so many plans, i had the next two years planned out and in just a few days all that went out the window. i was lined up to get a better job, i was planning a trip to see my family in Texas and go camping in Galveston, then i was gonna move into an apartment with a friend of mine, and next summer/fall we were gonna go to Hawaii together. Next fall i was gonna start taking gen ed classes at OTC, and maybe some Bible classes at Evangel or BBC. i think God thought it was funny that i had everything all planned out and decided to teach me a lesson about His plans. So He picked up my whole world, shook it for a minute, and put it back down on it's side. Or at least that's what it felt like... Except in a good way... Maybe you just had to be there lol :p
Anyways, so i was accepted into the intern program at CDO, so for the next year i'll be living and working at camp. Not really what i had planned but i'm super excited! This is one change i'm completly fine with, i didn't know about the internship when i started working at CDO, but as soon as i heard about it i knew it was something i wanted to be a part of. So yea, my life got completely turned inside out and upside down but i know it'll be totally worth it!

Staff Worship

Wednesday nights at CDO were staff worship nights. We would all gather together in GTC basement and have a worship service. But i was completely different from any other worship I've been a part of. Josh and Ezra would lead the first few songs, then people would start asking for certain ones, then after 3 or 4 songs, someone would start singing the one they wanted next, and everyone else would join in. We all worshiped in different ways, but it was all ok. Everyone was open to new forms of worship, and no one made anyone else feel inferior for doing something a little different or unexpected. At times i would be standing and singing, other times my hands would be raised and I'd be dancing, sometimes I'd be openly crying, and other times I'd be on my knees too humbled by God's power to even speak. It was all ok. It was all excepted. It was real. It was so different from the churches I've been too. i felt free, like i could do anything and it's ok, accepted, and even encouraged. i was freely worshiping in a way i can't anywhere else. Other places i feel like people are watching, like they might not approve of my own brand of worship. That's why i love staff worship, no one is looking. It's all ok. And I'm really gonna miss it!

After A While

After A While
Unknown

After a while you learn the subtle differences between
Holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaving and
Company doesn’t mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises
And you begin to accept your defeats with your head
Up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult,
Not the grief of a child
And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow’s ground is much too uncertain
For plans
After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get to much
So plant your own garden and decorate your own
Soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring
You flowers
And you learn that you really can endure…
That you really are strong.
And that you really do have worth.
